Sacrifice is an essential part of being a Catholic and Dominican school. In the game of chess, making sacrifices to win the match is necessary. St. Pius V School offers an after school Chess Team that plays against local Providence schools. Chessmasters from all over Rhode Island come after school weekly to teach St. Pius V Firedogs of all ages and levels how to play chess. These students then have the opportunity to face students from other schools in a fun and competitive setting.
Recently the St. Pius V Chess Team won a match against De La Salle Middle School, 4-0. Winning or losing aside, the Chess Team promotes for our students the striving for victory with Christ in the world: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the Faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me, but also to all who love His coming” (2 Timothy 4:7-8).
