St. Pius V School is currently working in conjunction with our neighbors, Providence College, to build a new community garden on our campus. PC student volunteers are working with our students in grades 2-8 to start up a gardening/recycling/composting club. Our teachers are building gardening and composting elements into our science curricula and starting seedlings in the classroom. These seedlings will then be transplanted to our raised beds.
Once our gardens are sustainable, we will be donating our produce to a local organization called Chefs Feeding Kids, a group who work with local underprivileged children, teaching them the importance of healthy eating habits for better nutrition. This, in turn, will teach our students about being philanthropic and giving back.
Through a partnership with these three organizations, we hope to make a lasting impact on the hungry right in our area.
